Each year, thousands of artists and fans find themselves in Austin, Texas for the annual South by Southwest festival – a week-long celebration of music, film and art. Performing at this event has become a critical tool for emerging artist. This year newcomers to the festival 713 Magazine hosted their first DOWNSOUTH concert at Austin’s premiere event venue, The Belmont. The concert featured a strategic lineup of rappers on the rise, including DJ Drama co-signed artist Lil Uzi Vert, Houston native Maxo Kream and Asap Mob’s Playboi Carti.
I caught up with Uno the Activist, who also took the 713 Magazine stage yesterday. The Atlanta rapper spoke on his new collaboration with Playboi Carti “V Lone Thug”, his first SxSW experience and how important he feels it is for young people to go after their dreams.
He said, “we’re really just showing people the light. You can really just do what you want and you can be successful at a young age, if you put your mind to it.” He went on to discuss his relationship with a few of the other artists at the show, describing them as family. “These are my brothers, beyond the music. Fans wanna feel good vibes, when we make music it’s more live because there’s more chemistry and more vibes” he explained.
One of the artist in this family is Maxo Kream, who also linked up with Playboi Carti in 2015 on his single “Fetti.” Over the years the Houston emcee has established himself as one of the most creative young lyricist, known for his innate storytelling skills. He paints his lyrics in a manner that allows fans to journey through his world with ease. His well received third mixtape “Maxo 187” reflects his original sound and style of rap. Last night, the rapper gave the audience their money’s worth, performing a few of his most popular tracks.
Another hot name in the rap game right now is Philly rapper Lil Uzi Vert, whose performance was cut short due to a brawl in the audience. Soon after that, the event came to an abrupt end leaving fans a bit disappointed. None the less, the 713 DOWNSOUTH concert was a success. Great crowd, great music, great time. Be sure you catch the next one!
